There are many factors that affect the participation of employees in plan sponsor retirement plans. In 2006 Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) conducted a survey that showed race/ethnicity as a factor affecting participation in plan-sponsored retirement plans. According to the survey, white participants had significantly higher participation, regardless of firm size and earnings. Interestingly, the results also revealed that the birthplace of Hispanic workers plays a role in their participation. Hispanics born in the United States had higher participation rates than those born outside of the U.S.
